What is Stone Disease?
Stones can form in the kidney or bladder and also travel into the urethra. Stones form when there is an imbalance between certain chemicals that are naturally present in urine, including oxalate, calcium and phosphate. When these substances become concentrated in the urine, there is a tendency to form solid crystals, which can develop into stones when materials build up around these solid masses.
Some stones are small enough to be passed through the urinary tract system on their own, while other stones are too large and painful to pass and must be surgically removed by a specialist.
Who Treats Stone Disease?
While most general urologists treat stone disease, it is beneficial to see a urologist who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and metabolic management of your stone disease to help prevent future stones from impacting your life. At Chesapeake Urology, we have a team of specialists who focus on advanced stone disease as well as metabolic evaluation of stones for the most comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management of stone disease.
